Community, pastoralism, landscape: Eliciting values and human-nature connectedness of forest-related people

Globally, around 0.78 billion rural people live in close proximity to forests and have been considered “forest-dwelling” and/or “forest dependent”. Forest dependency has so far mainly studied material terms, while the non-material relationships addressed less frequently. To fill this gap, general objective of study is assess forest-dwelling people’s relationship their community, livestock, forest landscapes through a relational values human-nature connectedness lens. Using Zagros mountains Iran as case study, we conducted individual interviews with 35 villagers who within that are engaged pastoral activities. Emerging themes were identified categorized by qualitative analysis. We found dwellers emphasized complex array relate landscapes. These included experiential, emotional, cognitive, philosophical dimensions connectedness. Respondents expressed an erosion practices related articulated very few positive visions for future these practices. conclude participatory processes tools may be valuable empowering identify pathways toward desirable future. encourage landscape conservation strategies become socially inclusive considering deep stewardship
